Moore's law provides the hardware.

Wireless buildout will provide the commo links.

JINI is the object model.

Presto, every mechanical object around us is networked to the supernet. Science fiction, maybe, probably not.

What is the mode of currency? Here is where things get rather philosophical. Why wouldn't everything know its value, and charge me per use? Or, more simply, I could walk up to my lawn mower, and ask it how much is in my bank account.

I am still working my way through it myself, but conceptually, there is no such thing as a single purpose computer anymore. JINI provides that object the capability to be whatever I want it to be at that time assuming it can get the right "component" from another object in the system. In this kind of architecture, I think it becomes meaningless to have a single portal, the portal is objects in the world around me, and I could mow my lawn and pay my bill at the DQ at the same time.

Regards,

bp
