Ito Yokado announces a further 2% discount...

Many "depa-to" (department stores) in metropolitan areas had announced they would pick up the 5% sales tax, in effect a 5% discount for the month of Dec, in an effort to boost sales... Well, if everybody does it then it is back to square one so Ito Yokado announce that it would give its customers an extra 2% (-7%) discount ... Sounds like weak pricing power... Do I hear deflation?

On the news last night (News 23 from TBS) they had a piece on the S&L scandal (which I am not very familiar with at all) and how it was resolved there. They showed Charles Keating in court and outlined how some Non-Profit Organizations had a big hand in rendering public some of the dirty laundry stored in the S&L files. They then pointed out that until last week , Japan had nothing in the way of NPOs (Non profit org) although they did have "hojin" organizations. The problem with those I think was the amount of cash needed to start one, so basically they were all part of or sponsored by large companies, industry groups or wealthy private educational organizations, so none had any grassroot level involvement and most were considered plush retirement jobs or paid PR.

Another thing, even though they can now be set up more easily according to the reporter of the story, there is no tax deduction granted for contributions in place in the tax law...

That is it for today?
