NCDI up 25% today.

Just wanted to remind everyone of the article in MIDRANGE Systems that stated that IBM had already sold 500,000 Network Stations (NC's):

cardinal.com

"Although the thin clients are still unavailable, IBM claims to have already sold its 1996 production capacity of 500,000 units. According to Frank Soltis, IBM AS/400 architect, most of these customers are purchasing the terminals as replacements for their PCs. "The thing that is driving this is the cost of fat clients," Soltis says."

Also - another article at the same site:

cardinal.com

"Every morning, an estimated 16 million users sign-on to an AS/400. About 12 million of these users are interacting with their AS/400s in client/server mode via PCs. However, depending on whose numbers you use, maintaining each of these PCs costs between $5,000 and $10,000 a year. For many AS/400 shops, it's a high price to pay in time and money just to get a GUI and a mouse on the end-user's desktop."

I do not think that the influx of NC's will stop the growth of Intel (Intel chips could be used in NC's), but NC's are here to stay. Who will care what chip is in an NC ... Nobody.
