Re: Home Offices -- Modem Jockies .....

Looks like my ol' wood powered Mac may be seeing the fiber-optic light at the end of the tunnel much sooner than I ever expected. Yesterday there was a high powered meeting of tech exec's in Denver trying to do something about the growing shortage of trained tech workers for the tech boom in Colorado (IOM has its main non-computer Zip operation north of Denver). Today there's news of US West pushing fiber into the rural areas because that's where so many modem jockies are heading to for quality of life factors (y2k concerns are pushing them too, I do real estate and deal with at least several inquires a week on it)

State maps fiber highway

By Roger Fillion
Denver Post Business Writer

Dec. 9 - The Colorado Department of Transportation has selected an Omaha
telecommunications company to build and operate a 1,000-mile fiber-optic network along major
highways, a project designed to deliver advanced communications services across Colorado.

Colorado officials hope the network's construction will lure telecommunications carriers to
remote parts of the state to provide the kind of sophisticated voice, data and video services more
widely available in cities such as Denver. The carriers essentially could do so by paying to plug
into the network........<<<<<
