It assists in cutting costs, widening the consumer base, making communication cheaper, globalisation (..and at least 1000 more reasons) . So its more than likely that during an economic downturn, the strategic advantage would lie in turning to internet solutions. Of course an economic boom would exponentially expand horizons of ecommerce, but a downturn may not affect it as severely as you think. Its a perfect win either way. JMHO.
