A few random thoughts for consideration:

American Epilepsy Society has been meeting this week in LA. Officially finish up tomorrow but today is really the wrap up. According to CYBX, a total of 32 VNS Abstracts (VNS = Vagus Nerve Stimulation) were to be presented this year -- double the number of presentations last year.

Last Friday NBC nightly news carried a follow up story about a boy from Webster, Texas who has had a Cyberonics VNS implant. He has gone from multiple serious seizures daily to less than 1 per month. No mention of Cyberonics in the story but they are the ones who provided a miracle in this young boy's life. Similar miracles are happening throughout the US and the world. One of theses days we'll hear about these stories on CNBC and the stock could move quite a bit more.

CYBX's VNS implants in the US last quarter grew 50% over the previous quarter to give you an idea of possible growth rates. International sales have barely been tapped.

In the background are two other considerations. First, VNS may also work for Parkinson's and other debilitating neurological disorders. Research is underway and another trip to the FDA may be on the horizon. Second, Cyberonics may well be a takeover candidate at some point. If either comes to pass, it's REALLY a big winner.

One last thought: Patent protection is solid. With the patent, CYBX has a virtual monopoly with its technology because there is no competing technology available at this time. As an investor I tend to like monopolistic situations and this one is a feel good monopoly because of the help they are bringing to patients for whom drug treatments just didn't work and for whom there seemed to be no hope. I look forward to hearing many more real life stories.

No such thing as a sure bet but Cyberonics gets pretty close, IMO.
