To All, IDC is out with their joke pc market projections. They are predicting dollar "shipments" up 12.2% in this 4th quarter and 12.8% next year. Several things to note:
1. IDC's end of year projections have been too high and lowered every year for the last four.
2. Their #s, though higher than reality for next year, are still MUCH lower than what the boxmaker, chippies and the other scuzzollas are claiming.
3. The key is the word shipments. If Compaq ships several hundred thousand boxes to the channel because of huge, money losing incentives, it is a shipment. The fact that these boxes are not sold to a customer doesn't fit into their method of measurement.
4. I do think that their predictions, though still silly on the upside, are a real improvement over previous years. Yes, they kowtow to their industry paymasters, but this time they are not touching their heads to the ground to put a totally impossible spin on the #s.
5. They finally noticed that Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia are having economic problems. <G> But we shouldn't laugh. 3 years ago they didn't know anything about conditions in these countries.
