Apparently not everything "NET" gets tons of money thrown at it. But you would think that an Internet e-commerce company wouldn't have to go begging for cash, wouldn't you? Perhaps the consolidation will leave only the very biggest - AOL, YHOO, and AMZN standing?

Mayor Rendell to Announce Microsoft Investment Package; Philadelphia E-Commerce Initiative to 'Revolutionize' Local Business Climate

Philadelphia Mayor Edward G. Rendell and Microsoft Corporation Group Vice President for Sales and Support, Jeff Raikes, will announce a package of local economic development investments to an audience of over 600 business and civic leaders during a luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Wyndham Franklin Plaza Hotel. The investments, provided under the "Microsoft Philadelphia Electronic Commerce Initiative," include consulting, software and training grants for non-profit organizations to develop the necessary support infrastructure to assist technology start-ups, small businesses and established corporations focusing on new opportunities in Internet commerce. In addition, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and SafeGuard Scientifics, Inc. (NYSE:SFE), the highly successful technology investment concern in Wayne, Pa., will announce support for Drexel University's newly formed SafeGuard Scientifics Center for E-Commerce Management. During the luncheon, which is titled "The Next American Revolution: Digital Commerce Philadelphia," local business, civic and educational leaders will hear Raikes explain the impact of expanding electronic commerce on the local economy. Raikes will demonstrate the successful electronic commerce sites of local companies such as iQVC, WineAccess, and Electronics Boutique, all of which have used the Internet to create a competitive business edge in the digital marketplace. "Microsoft's commitments are an expression of the company's confidence in the Philadelphia region as a premiere location for the future growth of information technology," Mayor Rendell said. "Microsoft's efforts will greatly reinforce our own initiatives in Philadelphia to attract and grow technology and knowledge-based industries. We look forward to a strong relationship with Microsoft that will benefit the development of the city and the region as a hub for electronic commerce." The Microsoft Philadelphia E-Commerce Initiative also will introduce a new regional Web site that will serve as a resource for local companies interested in exploring e-commerce opportunities. The Web site will highlight local e- commerce training and seminar opportunities from non-profit support organizations, provide an "e-commerce assessment web" that guides businesses to important next steps, and announce special offers from local solution provider, consulting and training organizations. Visitors to the Web site will have the opportunity to enter an e-commerce business planning contest that will select winners for software, training and consulting grants from Microsoft and its local partners.
