Carl,
<<In my view the biggest winners will be shippers and extremely efficient mass distribution centers.>>
Thanks for your opinion.
I wonder if shippers are seeing a transition in how they measure capacity. Previously, you worried about tonnage. Now, I wonder, if shippers are reaching the capacity of single unit shipments destined for direct to door delivery.
Previously (simplified) product would go from manufacturer to warehouse => wholesaler's warehouse => retailer's warehouse=> retail store=> end consumer. Hugely inefficient but inefficiencies spread out amongst large numbers of units.
The e-commerce model has product going directly from manufacturer to end consumer (albiet with stops at UPS/FedEX/USPS/whatever distribution centers). Hugely efficient until it needs to go from shipper's regional distribution to "curbside". Many single units going to many different places. Labor and equipment intensive.
Seems the same bottleneck may exist as in bandwidth, the "Last Mile".
To the lawyers amongst us, What obstacles stand in the way of making electronic documents (electronically signed), a legal document. Or do they already have legal standing?
Eliminating some of the document shipping might free up more capacity for product and, of course, e-mail could replace traditional mail freeing up even more capacity.

I'm early in studying this so maybe there is plenty of capacity for increased e-commerce. I honestly don't know.
