I suggest first upgrading to 4.5 by clicking on /help/software updates.

Let it give you the upgrade, and install it per the instructions you encounter on the way.

Then you will have little 'engraved' bars with tiny arrows you can click on to either hide or reveal the various window sections, toolbars and so forth. This gives you personal control over the whole thing.

V4 might have done this, but I can't remember. Look at the side, top and bottom of the various groups and areas on your communicator windows.
