01/17/97 PerfectData announces easy-access,
low-cost Internet service for disgruntled AOL customers
SIMI VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 17, 1997--PerfectData
Corp. (NASDAQ:PERF) Friday announced the formation of an
easy-access, low-cost Internet access service.
This will be in a joint venture with Starnet Universe Internet
Inc., its subsidiary and an ISP. The service is available
immediately in the Los Angeles area. It will be expanded nationally
in the near future.
PerfectData will offer an $8.30-per-month, unlimited-use
service. This will give the user unlimited access to the Internet
as well as TCP/IP access to on-line services such as AOL and
Prodigy. AOL customers can use the PerfectData service and select
the AOL ``Bring Your Own Access'' (rate $9.95/month) and have
unlimited access to AOL for $18.25/month.
The major plus for the AOL subscriber will be no more busy
signals when trying to access the service.
Two separate lawsuits have been filed this week against America
Online by customers who have reported trouble accessing the system.
Additionally, hundreds of AOL subscribers have sent an on-line
petition to AOL saying that they will quit unless service is
improved. These problems will be solved by the PerfectData ISP.
PerfectData will implement a media blitz, using television,
radio and print to publicize this service. This will include
advertising on computer shows, talk shows, as well as sports and
news programming. This blitz shall commence on Super Bowl Sunday.
PerfectData, based in Simi Valley, designs and markets a broad
line of computer, office-care and maintenance products and
accessories. The products are designed to eliminate or minimize
contamination in and around computers and office automation
equipment, and to enhance user performance.
PerfectData began its move into the high-technology field last
summer with the acquisition of Starnet Universe Internet, a Web
server and Internet provider.
