To shed a file association: START -> Settings -> Folder Options -> File Types The rest is obvious. re:"choose the "open with" option. select the application you want. make sure the "always use this program..." box is checked." crispin, i would disagree with the portion of your instruction that says make sure the "always use this program..." box is checked. in doing so, one has effectively locked themselves into that choice for, i think, eternity. by that i mean i have never found a way to "unselect" or undo the "open with" choice once it is made. if one chooses incorrectly, the file is virtually locked away. (i am sure there is a work around for this, but no one i know knows it.) :) i've learned that lesson the hard way. i always make sure that the "always use this program" box is not checked.
