Craig...I'm going to comment here because I know exactly where you're coming from.....When I first started investing in something other than a bank account I started trading commodities....In commodoties trading there is no such thing as "staying" long...Long is a very short period of time...because of that, when I began investing in the stock market my mindset was to buy and sell in short spurts....After racking up a number of poorly timed buys and sells and selling short of stocks (short in commodoties is not inherently much different than going long) I looked over the previous year's gains and realized for the first time I would have been MUCH farther ahead to have just bought one or two companies and HELD...In those instances I WOULD HAVE increased my personal portfolio SEVERAL HUNDRED PERCENT over what I did....And it wasn't so much that I didn't know what to invest in (in the beginning there was some of that too however) as I had been in and out of several 200-300 percent gainers---in and out, in and out, in and out......Since then I have researched what the good companies are bought and held, through all the ups and downs, and SURE ENOUGH I've been experiencing the 100%+ gains per year ever since.....
