Not to mention the fact that a huge % of software "failures" are actually due to poor up-front negotiations with the client - underbidding etc. I would put most enterprise software implementation failures in this category. It has nothing to do with the core competency of the individuals involved... there were some excellent examples of this in the book "Taming Wild Software Schedules". There are benefits to competency evaluations Im sure, but to assume that a direct result of that will be fewer failures is naive, imo.

Yes, I'm sure a Math major is an expert on this. The problem is that people who "talk" alot and know some key words are usually the ones who don't know jack crap. They then become managers. Reggie could be a manager big time. He could be a Director.

I don't know why this is any different than any other profession. I like to work on cars, but I surely don't have the balls to charge anybody. It's a hobby.

I'll agree a majority of project failures are due to inability to get requirements from customers. Why is that? Just can't figure it out. Duh, hehe. Are customers experts in defining requirements? Use cases. Read Jacobson.

Some of the craziest things I've seen:
1) Inheritence used 8 levels deep for a user interface. Everything
inherited from a PopUpMenu Class.
2) Database table 250+ columns wide. Some of the column names had
one for each month. Slightly un-normalized.
3) Don't know how to use a for loop. Let's duplicate the code
10 times.
4) ON AND ON.

These people made 70K+ on the east coast. I think I'll take up heart surgery. Anybody want to hire me?
