Christine,

kids who do drugs in high school tend to be more disturbed and less successful in general.

Do you think it's entirely honest to assume that the causative chain runs in this direction? Couldn't we say as easily that disturbed and less successful kids are more likely to take drugs, and to have serious problems with drug use? My own observation in the dope years was that people who brought drug use to a really self-destructive point were usually those that had serious problems before they started using drugs. Blaming it on the dope is a convenient but not always accurate reaction. It always amazes me when parents don't realize that a kid has a drug problem until the kid is already a serious abuser, or even addict. That level of inattention gives a strong hint of what the pre-existing problem is.

it is harder to concentrate, easier to get really lazy about schoolwork, that you feel like eating way too much junk food,

I suppose. I smoked while in high school, but didn't actually attend school stoned, as I would surely have giggled and otherwise made it obvious. Mostly we would go sailing, which is a lot of fun and puts you where parental observation is unlikely. Pretty innocent, and I doubt that any permanent damage was done.
