Although I am no expert in oil & gas, I believe the analogy here is like syphoning liquid out of a container. The fire caused a suction effect to happen, and as the gas burned the pressure increased in the well (possibly cracking the casing). The vacuum sucked water from somewhere. There are several possibilities, as people have mentioned, as to where the water is coming from. A cracked casing would most likely mean capping the well, and starting over. There is also a possibility that the gas zone was high pressure but small and becoming depleted, and the water came in from an underground source to replace the void left by a lot of the gas. The reservoir could have been huge also, but the pressure may have caused the reservoir wall (pocket for the gas/oil) to crack and be infiltrated with water. Also, I'm not sure how tight the casing is relative to the hole they drilled, but is it possible that the water was sucked in from the outside of the casing at some depth without actually passing through the casing (down the outside of the casing then up the inside)? There are more possibilities and I don't mean to exclude any of them and give more weight to these than others people have mentioned.

It is truly a guessing game at this point.
