Depends upon what you want to run. Sure there are lots of things
which will run as fast on a cheap PC as on a much more expensive
SGI. The SGI will win on larger, more demanding applications.
Especially those requiring 64-bit address space and huge I/O.
Large database server accessed by hundreds of PC users for example.

There is nothing to stop SGI owners getting samba for free. They
now have the option of buying an optimized version, and getting
support, which IIRC is what the 1500 is for.

In our department we are moving more and more to Linux for
workstations (replacing HPs mostly). We don't do much graphics
work so we don't need the extra power of more expensive Unix
workstations. Some Linux boxes are used for number-crunching
as well, but mostly for the smaller jobs. Large jobs use
various servers and supercomputers (T3E, Origin 2000, SP2 etc).

My point is that, IMHO, Linux doesn't have to be a threat to
SGI. On the contrary, Linux and IRIX fit very well together,
much better than NT and IRIX. It is good to see SGI taking
advantage of open-source software to improve their systems.
I am hoping that they will continue this process to include
Linux on the Visual Workstations.
