John: I thought the same as you and bought an Imation LS120 drive for my desktop about 6 months ago, before I realized (belatedly) that its disk format was incompatible with the Iomega 100 MB Zip. The Sony 200 MB HiFD has a third format incompatible with either the Zip or the Imation LS120. I thought better of my LS120 purchase, and exchanged it unopened for a standard 100MB Zip, which allows me to exchange large files on Zip disks with others.

The major barriers to the Sony/Imation products is the enormous installed base of Zip drives, and the fact that all the PC OEM's (including Sony) currently offer internal Zip drives either as a standard or an option, and not the Sony/Imation drives. Iomega's installed base was the major reason that Syquest went belly-up, despite having a technical superior product line (according to all the reviews I read). Do you have any info on how much the Imation/Sony products have eaten into Iomega's sales?

Iomega is also rumored to be coming out with its own 200MB Zip drive, that will not only be backwards compatible with the 100MB format, but will also be able to read standard 1.44MB floppies -- have you heard anything about this?
