SMART Modular Technologies Introduces the SMARTengine/740cPCI-3U Computer Board for Telecommunications and Data Communications Applications
PR Newswire - December 08, 1998 08:16

740e RISC Processor Operates at 233, 266 or 300MHz

Small Form-Factor Computer Board Targets Space-Constrained Applications

Custom Design Services Deliver Rapid, Perfect-Fit Solutions

FREMONT, Calif., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- SMART Modular Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMOD) announced today the expansion of its embedded computer board product family with the addition of the SMARTengine/740cPCI-3U, a RISC PowerPC-based embedded single board computer (SBC). The implementation of the 740-based CPU provides high-speed processing capabilities to perform the compute and I/O functions for advanced performance systems. Additionally, the CompactPCI (cPCI)-based system features a small profile 3-U form factor to target telecommunications and data communications applications with increased space limitations.

This most recent addition to SMART's diverse product line of cPCI single board computers is controlled by a PowerPC 740 RISC microprocessor operating at speeds of 233, 266 and 300MHz with 16KB instruction cache and 16KB data cache. The SMARTengine/740cPCI-3U is designed to provide speed and efficiency through the use of a 10/100BaseT LAN interface and a PCI bus which operates at a 132MB/sec sustained transfer rate. The utilization of the PowerPC 740 CPU provides the processing power necessary to maintain the flow of data for numerical calculations and Direct Memory Access (DMA) management.

The SMARTengine/740cPCI-3U is available with memory configuration densities ranging from 16MB to 128MB. The board utilizes additional memory in the form of 8KB of NVRAM, 512KB Boot ROM (Flash) and up to 8MB Flash memory.

The 3-U SBC features a SGS Thompson 1487 real time clock with 8 KB of backed up RAM and three counter/timers with interrupt capability and parallel I/O. The board design supports 7 bus masters in cPCI mode, as well as multiple real-time operating systems (RTOSs) such as VxWorks, pSOS, Nucleus and C-executive. The power requirement for the SMARTengine/740cPCI-3U is 7.5A at +5V DC.

Nageen Sharma, SMART's Embedded Computer Products Division Vice President, noted that a growing number of high-end applications are demanding high-performance RISC-based SBCs in the small profile (100 mm x 160 mm) 3-U form factor. "Currently, this small form-factor is most prevalent in telecom and data communications markets. However, we are also now seeing it extend into industrial automation and medical industries," stated Sharma.

Sharma added, "For telecommunications applications requiring standard off-the-shelf technology, the SMARTengine/740cPCI-3U offers high performance, reliability and I/O functionality. Its high bandwidth is ideal for many high-speed data communication applications such as intelligent peripherals and network management."

Sharma also noted that SMART's Custom Design Services group can use the SMARTengine/740cPCI core design to deliver a perfect-fit solution for high volume applications. SMART's custom, perfect-fit SBC design expertise also extends to sub-micron ASIC technology for applications that require high-performance, low-cost and small form-factors. Armed with a growing portfolio of standard products including the SMARTengine MIPS R5000 cPCI and the Intel Pentium-based SMARTengine/iPC-3, SMART integrates existing functional core architectures to dramatically reduce design time and speed time-to-market for customers who require custom solutions.
