Your comment about "barter.com" triggered a thought regarding another approach being used. It is called a "Dutch Auction." The concept is the reverse of a normal auction. The price starts at the full ask and continues to drop until someone places a "buy" order. The first bidder gets the item.

I found one site so far and I have no idea if they are a publicly traded company. It doesn't hurt to know what other competition is out there.
