My understanding...
ECC use error-correction scheme while parity memory is merely a memory error-detection capability. When a parity error occur, you will see a BIOS message like "Parity Error - System halted", some newer OS may able to raise an fatal exception with an option to let you ignore and save existing data and close running apps.
