I find it unlikely that humans will become extinct. More likely, they will lose their place at the top of the heap here on Earth.

Perhaps there will be a resurgence of other mammals as the humans are weakened by their Y2K experience. Maybe we'll become subservient to other beings. So, instead of being the humans' planet, Earth will become, say, the planet of the apes.

There's a great story hidden in there, somewhere.
