Nihil,>>> It will always IMO be difficult for one with either an engineering or business education to learn the other part of what is needed to head a successful tech company. <<<

I couldn't agree with you more, but I think Tony's point has a lot of merit. A person with a Phd. in Quantum Mechanics can probably pick whatever there is to pick up in business studies a lot easier than than an MBA can pick up physics. But so much for book learning. After that you have to have talent for business or for physics. That is all a different subject matter.

But, for a modern tech company to be successful in an on going basis, the person at the top has to have the technical vision and be able to implement the business plan. This has to reside in one person.

This is where I think Intel has an advantage. A non techie is going to have a tough time there in top managment. Intel probably recognise this whereas IBM, Compaq, some of these Internet companies that are started by some giant corporate monolith do not.

In these other companies, after the super sales guy financial wiz gets through fooling Wall Street, there's not much of a company left for the successor CEO.
