I congratulate you on a brilliant observation! Actually, this conclusion extends to all of Dell's product offerings. Many posters have felt that this is a negative, but I, like you, believe it is the driving force behind Dell's success, because it allows the company to focus on sales, assembly, and distribution -- precisely those areas where the company excels.
In talking about a computer as a "commodity" it should be stressed that the term does not mean that Dell's product offerings are indistinguishable from other manufacturers -- they certainly are in terms of reliability, customer support, etc. It simply implies general acceptance of the generic product.
I again, I think your observation is nothing short of brilliant.
