____________________________________________ Thursday December 10, 1:50 pm Eastern Time National Semiconductor reports second quarter loss
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec 10 (Reuters) - The computer chip maker National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:NSM - news) said on Thursday it lost $94.4 million in its most recent quarter as costs related to layoffs and a terminated contract dragged down results that already were hurt by a 29 percent decline in sales.
National said the loss amounted to 57 cents per share and came on sales of $510 million. A year earlier, the company earned $28.9 million, or 17 cents per share, on sales of $720 million. The period, the second quarter of the company's fiscal year, ended Nov. 29.
Excluding previously announced one-time charges for layoffs and the termination of a manufacturing contract with International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news), the company lost $48.6 million, or 29 cents a share, in the quarter.
ional said orders for all major product groups and from all geographic regions declined from the year-earlier period. (Grossly underperforming the sector average, IMHO--ibexx notes)
However, orders in the quarter showed seasonal improvement and were up 12 percent from the first quarter.
September bookings declined from strong August levels, improved in October and finished in November with the strongest bookings in 12 months, the company said.
National's stock was down 31 cents at $16.31 on the New York Stock Exchange.
With a deep sigh, Ibexx
