Obviously they believed, so did the defendant. The defendant is too scared of the implications and refuses to apologize with any truth. The plaintiff finally won substantial public belief in her story due to more recent events coming to light making the defendants continued denials(I deny it but I'm sorry- hahahasoutherndralw- WHAT apology?) suddenly implausible. The defendant believed and paid her costs- and she got large public acceptance without need for the plaintiff to directly clear her name as any man of Presidential quality Would!
