re: FAA

Your article you linked to has no mention of the FAA :-) Try this one: computerworld.com

The history of the FAA system is not good. Years ago, they spent billions on a fancy replacement system that ended up so useless that it had to be completely abandoned. The existing system is so old/poorly maintained that failures have become a regular occurance. (Heck, they are canabalizing replacement parts from development systems!) Some of the IBM mainframes it runs on were not designed to IPL (reboot) past Dec 31, 1999. They didn't get around to seriously thinking about this until fairly recently.

I would not be at all surprised if Y2K pushes this fiasco system over the edge. Dates have never been met in the past by the people who manage this thing, so who knows how long this thing could be down.
