Ericy's most-recently announced problems, earnings shortfall, technical problems with its handsets, etc. has got to be putting a lot of pressure on the company to come to an agreement with Qcom. Can you imagine the telephone calls to top management from Ericy's large shareholders? It's got to be getting intense--especially with the contemplated layoffs. This is "off with their heads" kind of pressure on management.

The handwriting is on the wall: Ericy needs cdma to boost its business, and it has to come to Qcom to get it. Ericy furthermore cannot afford to try to make its own chips at this point. No major, well-known-to-the-end user manufacturer making its own proprietary chips has succeeded so far. MOT tried and fell on its face. Even Nokia, which has a sterling reputation for quality, is encountering problems with its cdma handsets resulting in low sales & high returns. The simple truth is that it is not easy to manufacture a cdma handset, especially if you don't buy QUALCOMM ASIC's!
