I'm flattered your friend would think I work for Qwest, but I assure you I don't. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Tallahassee is the State capital, so I'm just a lowly State worker who works with computers (Novell LAN networks).

I have been reading Wired magazine cover-to-cover for over two years, and that is where I first learned of Qwest. I am a former 'AMATIAN' who had to look for some new investments when they were taken over a year ago by Texas Instruments (I bought at AMTX at $6, then sold it two years later at $20).

The article in Wired mentioned a train was headed for Tallahassee, so that peeked my interest. I then started reading this thread. I recalled seeing pictures of the spools in the article, so when I saw the train with the spools, I pulled over and started asking questions.

I let them know I owned stock in the company, and they were willing to talk, so I started asking questions. I had months before called up their local office, and they were quite willing to talk then, too.

I'm not sure how much of a secret they need to keep things. They probably don't usually have someone drive up who knows the things I did about the company, so they were talkative. Even if I was a representative of a competitor, they're still going to get the network completed when they do. In other words, they probably didn't see any harm in telling me these things.

At work, if you want to know what's going on, ask the secretaries. What better chance to find out what's happening with Qwest than to ask the guys actually building the network?

One last thing: If anyone isn't already reading Wired, I'd recommend it highly. Does anyone know any other good reading materials on Internet-related topics? I mean, other than Silicon Investor?
