Scrapps - with today's online trading and $9 commissions it is becoming more like "Wheel of Fortune" every day. We have an entire battery of people getting their "buy" and "sell" signals from the same computer programs, and even though they may differ slightly between each other they all hit around the same time since they are all loosly based on the same underlying math. Over the past months I think I have heard mention of "Program Trading" on CNBC more times than I have heard "The Dow is Up".

It used to be relatively easy to play the techs. All you had to do was to pick out a few good bets, buy them in the early fall and hold them until the early summer. In '95 it almost looked like the summer selloff phenomena was not going to happen due to the great Windows 95 and the memory it was going to require - you saw what happened.

A good deal of the problems that the individual investor is facing are due to the big brokers and funds having the upper hand when calling the shots. News can be spread so quickly in this day and age of the internet, and a single statement can swing prices to their advantage in a matter of minutes. Sometimes I think a good amount of the "lemming pack" needs a prescription to tranquilizers, at least something that will allow them to sit and think about things before they react against everything they have learned so far. My favorite statement is a well known one that you hear from time to time: "Has anything changed the fundamentals behind why you bought the company's stock?"

Although it will take a great deal of time for the new NASDAQ rules to start to benefit everyone, I for one will be glad for that possible extra ¬ point that may start staying in our accounts.
