David, I have been around diabetics my entire life and I fail to see how the LASSETTE will be anything other than a niche market.
1. They are way to expensive unless they can cut the price down to (my guess the 300 dollar mark)
2. What is the cost of the test strips needed to read the glucose levels. This is the most expensive part of current lancet testing. 100 strips run about 70-75 dollars.
3. Your argument that parents will want it because it does not cause their children pain is valid to some degree , however the largest percentage of diabetics are not children they are aging adults who have pain tolerance enough to put up with a pin prick when the alternative runs $2,000 plus the yet unknown cost of the test strips.
4.Several companies are developing non invasive glucose testing using such things as light. If they get the FDA to ease up the requirements for PMA testing they will be available in a couple years. IMHO this is a step in the right direction but I don't think they have a chance in hell of capturing even a half a percent of the Glucose monitoring business. I can't imagine insurance companies authorizing payments of $2,000 plus per patient when they can get away with a fraction of that price per patient using traditional lancettes, Can you?
