Charley Reese's column today:

Failure to impeach Clinton will harm country

Bill Clinton twice lied under oath. That's perjury, a felony. That's all any honorable member of the U.S. House needs to know to vote for impeachment.

Ken Starr is irrelevant. So, too, are Monica Lewinsky, Linda Tripp, Hollywood, the man in the moon, Bugs Bunny and any lawyer or 1aw professor's opinion. Public opinion polls are irrelevant Last fall's election results are irrelevant. The next elections are irrelevant.

Nor is there a constitutional alternative to impeachment. Impeach or nothing.

To not impeach is to say it is OK for the president, who swears an oath to faithfully execute and enforce the laws of the land, to commit felonies. At this moment, people are in prison for doing exactly what Clinton did — lie under oath. If Clinton were in the military, he would be facing court-martial and dishonorable' discharge and probably prison time.

To not impeach is to say that those holding office in the House are as dishonorable and as disdainful of their duty as Clinton. If I had to bet, I'd bet they are dishonorable. Their only question should be, Did Clinton commit perjury? Instead, they are trying to decide what is politically expedient. I have never felt such contempt for the U.S. government.

Clinton's crimes have no more to do with politics than with sex. It is irrelevant what he lied about. All that counts is that he lied under oath.

It is irrelevant what the political consequences of impeachment will be. All that counts is that he lied under oath. And no one “got” Clinton. He got himself. He chose to have sexual relations with an intern. He chose to lie about it. Having sex with an intern is not a crime. Lying about it under oath is a crime. This whole disgusting mess is 100 per cent Clinton's doing.

No one should forget that this despicable man sat in the Oval Office having sex with Lewinsky while he made the decision to send American men and women into harm's way in the Balkans.

In the most crude and vulgar way, this act alone shows what utter con tempt Clinton has for the military, for the office of the president, for the American people. The military at least deserves better leadership.

“For God's sake, Congress, do your duty,” a Marine Corps officer wrote who put his career on the line to publicly call for Clinton's impeachment.

I say amen. I am at a loss really to explain why people keep trying to defend Clinton. It's as if they were arguing that someone who defecated in the punch bowl at a formal dinner has not committed a breach of etiquette.

The consequences of not impeaching Clinton will be bad. He, being a sociopath, will not be grateful for dodging the bullet. He will become even more arrogant, even more convinced that he is invincible and can get away with anything. They same lying, reckless disregard for duty and honor carries over, of course, into every aspect of his administration. He is a national security risk.

Letting Clinton off the hook will leave a bitter taste in many who have seen far more honorable men lose their careers over far less serious offenses during this feminist-leftist-dominated administration.

I think it is a watershed event. If Congress fails to do its duty and impeach this sorry excuse for a human being, then the country will never be the same afterward. No one will ever look at the flag or the White House or our other symbols in the same way he once did.
America will have branded itself incorrigibly corrupt and, like other corrupted empires, will inevitably lose its power, which will be its only claim to status.
