Regarding the demise of Apple Computer - if crunching a few numbers is all it takes to understand the market every high school student would be rich. It amazes me how analysts love to talk about numbers but refuse to look at the fundamentals of what the company has or does not have to sell.

There are a few reasons that Apple computer will be around a long time and will come back strong:

1) Although my business is msft based, I am in constant contact with printers and graphic arts houses. They are all 90-100% Macintosh and none of them are even thinking about changing. Don't believe me - pick up the phone and call any printer. They are willing to handle your files but prefer Macs.

2) Go into your average copy house on any corner in the country. If msft is sweeping the market, they should be all msft based - their customers would demand it! They are not. Within 10 blocks of my house are about 7 of them and they are all 80-90% Macintosh.

3) These people spend a lot of money and they are just going to "wait out" the latest crisis. A typical comment I get is "I hope they hurry up and get over this latest change."

4) As you go upstream you get the same comments. I know decision makers in high volume ad agencies - all Mac and not going to change.

5) There are OS based ease of use issues such as this: Suppose you decide to name a accounting file the following name: "Bob's chart: 1) A/B ratio 2) A/B with 4.5 factor." - It would bomb on a msft OS. Users are not allowed to name a file as they wish. They are on the Mac. Which do you think is better?

Everyone agrees that the Mac has had a bad operating system but so does msft (the entire world, except msft, separates directories with a / ).

The people putting together the new Next/Apple OS are good (so good msft tried to buy them but failed). Technologically, it's hard to see how Apple could possibly come out of this anything but better than they were before both in quality of product and stock price.
