Full employment and cheap imports meant lots of disposable income and good margins for most retailers this year. These stocks were also viewed as "defensive" w.r.t. "foreign exposure" by many investors.

I like to play WMT in this sector - it is so dominant a weight in the index, besides performing well.

Note, picking WMT plus the 6 sub-sector leaders: BBY GPS HD WAG SWY and MCD would have returned ~ +87% (a little less than WMT alone) and, leaving out McDonald's, the kapital gains would be ~ +95% (a little better than WMT), with a bit less specific risk than WMT alone.

Another good balance to TechSpaetzles - this year - but essentially an employment:disposable income minus USD:Asian+LatAm currency import cost situation, which may or may not continue to exist. Personally, I give RLX.X one-half the weight of DRG.X in my portfolio.
