Considering to whom they're directed...but anyway..

It probably is more appropriate to obtain the info from SI. I have seen it posted somewhere that SI's position is one of requiring a court order. Certainly the lawyer had a 'tactical' reason for approaching it this way. Wonder what it could be...?
