1. I don't know a whole lot about Metaphase but I will make the following observations; Metaphase is specifically targeted at a vertical hard goods market (manufacturing) while Livelink is a more generalized tool which is probably more effective for soft goods (service type) organizations. Because of this Metaphase is very much about controlling a business process while livelink is abount controlling intranets; users of metaphase are probably going to have engineering, manufacturing, operations type backgrounds; users of livelink are more likely to have finance, human resource, information systems, and marketing backgrounds. As far as the particulars of document management and worlflow, I would not expect to find any best of breed solutions in the Livelink product (with the exception of their search engine), instead what they are offering is an integrated suite of applications. Finally my wild - ass guess is that Metaphase is on the order of 10-20 X more expensive than livelink from a per seat basis.
2. I have about twenty years in the software development business with about 15 of those managing developers in marketing oriented businesses. Currently I am an independent consultant creating Information solutions for small businesses that either arrange or host Outdoor travel experiences. I find this much less stressful than what I used to do...
