you are missing the point - Dell can't be credible in shifting to another chipset over a short term supply problem. The cost and disruption that Dell would suffer would far outweigh the benefit. Intel would not take such a threat seriously, they know too much about Dell's business.

I have felt for many years that Dell was placing themselves in a vulnerable position with this strategy, and that they needed to distance themselves somewhat from Intel and build an alternate capability, if only to avoid problems like this. But Dell has instead gone more and more deeply into the Intel camp.
