I really doubt this because I've been downloading and testing speed ever since I got hooked up with cable several months ago, and I NEVER downloaded faster than 800KB/s until the other day when I happened to hook up my other computer. 1100 vs the usual 700 is quite a difference. As soon as the download began I knew something was up by how fast the numbers were changing on the progress screen.

I'm going to go back and do some more trials. I just went through my BIOS settings, like Ali suggested. I don't really know what I'm doing here, but I did make some changes <g>. I changed system BIOS to Cachable from uncachable and 16Bit I/O Recovery Time from 2 to 1.

The BIOS changes had no effect on the download speed, so I went ahead and switched cpu's--running the cyrix 166 in the AMD machine: no difference.

I don't know if this helps, but the cyrix machine has a "Gigabyte" motherboard and the AMD (slower downloading) machine has a QDI motherboard. I don't know if I was right describing them both as "generic".

Next step is to get the cyrix machine running with the AMD processor in it. I have to look up the dip-switch settings for core voltage first. If it still downloads fast, that should tell me (or someone else) something.

If it doesn't download fast, then I have to go back and try to duplicate the fast download with the original setup. Hope it wasn't all a mirage.

Thanks for the ideas,
wily
