Cable Modem Customer Count To Top 500,000 At Year's End North American MSOs Add 400,000 Internet Subs in 1998, Extend Service Availability Beyond 20 Million Homes
CABLE DATACOM NEWS publisher Kinetic Strategies Inc. estimates North American MSOs will finish 1998 with 513,000 installed cable modem subscribers, up from 111,000 at the end of 1997, a one-year increase of 362 percent. As of December 31, 1998 cable modem service will be available to an estimated 21 million homes passed, 20 percent of all cable homes passed in North America.
@Home Network is projected to finish 1998 with 305,000 subscribers and 11 million homes passed in the U.S. and Canada. Road Runner's MSO partners Time Warner Cable and MediaOne will end the year with an estimated 160,000 cable modem subscribers in the U.S. and 6.8 million homes passed. Together, @Home and Road Runner affiliates dominate the market, serving 90 percent of all cable modem subscribers in North America.

As a group, Canadian MSOs made a strong showing this year. Canadian MSOs are projected to finish 1998 with a total of 140,000 cable modem subscribers, an impressive 1.4-percent penetration of all 10 million homes passed by cable in the country. By comparison, U.S. MSOs will finish the year with an estimated 373,000 cable modem subscribers, only .4 percent penetration of the approximately 93 million American homes passed by cable. |
