To all,
Fact Sheet on the European Union Privacy Directive
<<excerpt>>4. Is biometrics implicated by the EU Privacy Directive?
Under the Directive, personal data is defined as any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person ("data subject"). An identifiable person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identification number or to one or more factors specific to his physical, physiological, mental, economic, cultural or social identity.
While the word, "biometric" is not specifically cited in the text, biometric identifiers will likely be implicated by the Directive's definition of personal data. Thus, biometric vendors and companies using biometrics or planning to use biometrics need to understand the Directive and comply with its terms.
