I'll bet SI didn't plan on having to buy more storage media to handle this. Why wouldn't a PM to each party be sufficient? Clearly an abuse of limited storage media."

Many of us found it fascinating.

And it's probably not any more of an abuse of the storage media than many of the things posted in the "Coffee Shop" or elsewhere on SI. No worse, say, than #reply-6802929, to pop up a quick example.

Also, it's possible that the particular users in question turned off receipt of private messages... although I can't see that it is likely. No, I haven't checked.
