[First ASND's GRF and now Ray Smith's "packets:"]

<<<Today the graduate would hear 'Packets' he says.>>>

This has been a packet day. First Engineer sent me to ASND's conference call where I heard all about their hottest new product the GRF 400, "a high-speed IP switch which routes IP traffic at speeds unmatched in the industry. . . built around a switching core. . . . [resulting] in a box that can route 2.8 million packets per second . . . . nearly six times faster than competing products." And then I found out Ray Smith has packets on his mind, too.

Morey Ejabat, Ascend's CEO, says, "With the GRF product line we address the backbone network needs of Internet providers, carriers and enterprise network managers whose networks are overwhelmed by the quantity and complexity of the growing volumes of IP traffic." During the conference call, he estimated the market for the GRF to be $1.9B in 1999. I found it interesting that nearly every analyst present asked about GRF's acceptance in the market. When none could get the response they wanted---how big the internet high-speed switching market really was---one analyst asked, "If the GRF and TNT products were backed out, would the BtoB still be positive?" Ejabat hesitated and said, "No."

Looks as though there's a standing room only crowd waiting for the switches that solve the bandwidth problems on the backbone. All those ISPs (300 added to account last Q) and carriers are upgrading the highways in preparation for next year's faster models.

Did I hear a few more doubters leave the room?

Cheers!

Pat
