While he's not about to sell Coca-Cola or Gillette or AIG just because they're
trading at lofty multiples, that doesn't mean he's jumping into Internet stocks
any time soon. Poppenhagen and his team haven't been able to get
comfortable with this sector's riskiness. They're a bit queasy about valuations
because it's still impossible to figure out whether some of these newbies will
be winners in three, much less five years. Poppenhagen says he is enamored
of the high-fixed-cost, low- variable-cost business model, but he's still willing
to stay on the sidelines for a while. One risk he doesn't think many analysts
have factored in is logistical, especially for the online retailers like
Amazon.com. He contends that they might not be able to get their
merchandise out the door, on time, as demand really starts to swell.
