QwikSand -- Mozek,

Listen to Larry Ellison yourself at Comdex discussing how Oracle 8i can run directly against the hardware without an OS -- all that is necessary is a microkernal. He said this was to allow the use of the 64-bit Intel merced chip to be used and not to be held back by a 32-bit buggy Windows2000 OS. Obviously, however, a 64 bit Alpha or Sparc can do this today similarly without an OS. Listen to the talk and the discussion afterwards, it is fascinating.

He is later asked if one should also dispense with Solaris. Hear what he says (using a real networks player):

It is at about 31:50 that he begins to discuss running without an OS but the entire talk is well worth listening too but it is about one hour and 20 minutes including a very hot discussion.

All the best,
Michael
