Mark, the additional MMX instructions will allow a simple modem function to be implemented by the processor, but at what price to the overall performance of the system? The reason for peripheral cards has generally been to allow the CPU to concentrate on what it does best, and asking it to perform additional repetitive tasks only slows down the other things it needs to be doing at the time. Granted, it doesn't take all the power of a Pentium Pro to surf the internet, but that will be changing as the access bandwidth and multimedia content increase. Remember that Intel wants each new processor family to appear as an improvement in speed over the last ones, otherwise they somewhat lose their case in advertising them as an attractive upgrade.
