Hi Dennis - I believe the quick answer to your question is NO but they would compete in the low end market if they pre-load their servers with SUNW's SOLARIS 7 OS (x-86 version or Merced version when available).

Perhaps in 18 months when Intel is producing their MERCED chip will the DELL/INTEL machines really compete with the middle end of SUNW's server market.

However, IMO this would be a net positive for SUNW if the box makers pre-loaded their server machines with SUNW's SOLARIS OS. Software is a higher margin product and the market would eventually assign a higher PE to SUNW's future earnings.

It will be interesting to see how this develops in the future. Users will not tolerate systems crashes once they install E-Commerce application servers for their business. These mission critical applications must show an up time of 98% or higher.
