I sympathize! P&P stands for "Plug & Pray". Several of the most frustrating evenings I ever had were spent trying to install new modems. If the factory installed AT&T modem is on the mother board, I can't help. If it is is a plug-in card, the solution is simple. You must physically remove and un-install the existing modem before installing the new one.

I make no claims of being an expert at these matters. FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK! I take absolutely no responsibility for any problems you may have or any damage to your system that may result whether from my mistake or yours.

These instructions are for the version of Windows 95 installed on my 3-year old computer. Newer versions of Win95 or Win98 may work slightly differently.

To un-install the old modem:
1)Shut down your computer and physically remove the old modem.

2) After re-booting, open the CONTROL PANEL which can be found both in your start menu and in the MY COMPUTER folder.

3) double click on SYSTEM PROPERTIES

4) in the SYSTEM PROPERTIES dialog, select the DEVICE MANAGER tab

5) click on the "+" next to MODEM in the device list.

6) click on the entry for your old modem to high light it.

7) click on the REMOVE button at the bottom of the dialog.

8) Now you can install your new modem.

GOOD LUCK, YOU'LL NEED IT.
