There is is s lot of speculation on this thread that for example NTT-Docomo is ready to leave WCDMA and go for IS-95.Another
idea is that the standardsetting is more or less stopped because of the IPR:s that QCOM is holding.I would say that everything is moving forward with a high speed. The reason why 3GPP was founded was
that ETSI is working on the WCDMA airinterfacestandard with a GSM
core network which was decided as the 3G standard for Europe.ETSI
is the european standardorganization.Only companies that have
business in Europe can be members of ETSI.It means that other
standardorganizations couldn't work on the evolved GSM network
standard and the WCDMA for ETSI .That's the reason why they started 3GPP
It means that all the following standardorganizations are working
on a WCDMA standard with a GSM core network.
"The five founding 3GPP organizations are the Association of Radio
Industries and Businesses (ARIB) and the Telecommunications Technology
Committee (TTC), from Japan; ETSI; the U.S. T1 standards committee; and
South Korea's Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA). Two
Chinese bodies-the Ministry of Information Industry and the Research
Institute of Telecommunications and Transmission-are also expected to join "

The interesting thing is that the 2 important countries in the
world outside LatinAmerica that doesn't have a GSM network today
Korea and Japan are members in 3GPP.They don't have the advantage of having a GSM network before but they are also
supporting the 3GPP work.
This is just my guess. But I think many people on this thread are
dreaming if you think that WCDMA can be stopped.
