eBay Suspends User for Swindling Up to $100,000, Newsweek Says <Picture>
New York, Dec. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Internet auctioneer eBay Inc., which lets people buy, sell and trade items ranging from stamp collections to cars, suspended a former vendor who allegedly swindled eBay users out of at least $30,000 and possibly as much as $100,000, Newsweek magazine reported. Sonny Stemple offered items he never delivered on eBay, which isn't offering refunds to the victims, though eBay Chief Executive Margaret Whitman is advising them to ''take it up with local law enforcement.'' EBay's software broke down on Monday and Wednesday of last week, affecting thousands of bids, thought the site has had fewer than 10 hours of unscheduled down time since April, the magazine reported.
Last month, eBay said it plans to begin regional auctions for expensive items that are hard to ship long distance, such as cars and furniture. (Newsweek 12/21 72 www.newsweek.com) |
