Speaking of birds in hand and in the bushes, Hal has some interesting stories along those lines. Best of luck, Andrew.

Todd Arden, I share your observation about the possibility for AXC and HMTT to work together. Supporting our point are the following:

1) Harry Tan pointed out that Seagate, HMTT, and Maxtor co-funded the 1994-1995 studies conducted by Dr. Jack Judy of the University of Minnesotta MINT.

2) HMTT has a 11/19/93 patent that make 4 claims that basically outlines an improvement in AXC's keepered media because it activates a keeper layer WITHOUT a bias charge. My read is preliminary and you may want to read the actual patent #5,576,085 at

patent.womplex.ibm.com

The section that outlines the problems and proposed solutions are remarkably jargon-free and makes for interesting reading. Because AXC uses the bias charge to activate the keeper layer and amplify the magnetic signals, I really don't think that HMTT can achieve the same yield improvements with its zero-bias keeper layer.

3) Ampex has indicated that it has gotten keepered disks from one of the platter makers (4 with non-disclosure agreeements + IBM + Stormedia) which used its regular production lines to produce the samples. HMTT, as the technology leader among merchant platter suppliers, actually prides itself on its ability to conduct its R&D activities on its regular assembly lines in order to shorten its time to market.

Thanks for the report.

Gus
